I stumbled across a YouTube video recently. In it, the narrator makes this statement:
We teach you how to work efficiently – how to be a professional. And … how to do your market research.
Because your products are labor-intensive you must learn how to make elegant and beautiful paintings that you can paint in a relatively short period of time and you can market at a lower price. Selling more of them in order to build not only your income but also your reputation as a professional realist artist.
Everything you need to know to become a successful artist is in that statement. Left out, though, are some essential details. I thought it would be fun to examine what those details might be.
A while ago, a copywriting friend shared a video in which outlined the process by which he built a successful career. It is mind-bogglingly simple. While he was talking to writers, his process applies to artists too. So let’s start there.
Parris’ Four-Step Process
- Get really good fast!
- Market the hell out of yourself (and begin raising your price).
- Lower your profile (continue raising your prices).
- Multiply yourself
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll explore each of these steps in more detail and how they, specifically, apply to artists. Stay tuned…
